%X Remote sensing is an indispensable tool for the monitoring of fishing areas mainly in mangrove estuarine environments. The Landsat 8/OLI satellite images are important tools for this purpose with high potential for mapping mangrove areas, and thus the fishing grounds of the crab Ucides cordatus, one of the most important mangrove fishery resources along the Brazilian coast. In this study, we mapped the mangrove extractive areas of this crab in Cananéia estuary (São Paulo State), using Landsat 8/OLI satellite images. We applied color composites, visual discrimination and supervised classification using the SIG SPRING. We found that the best color composites for visual analysis are those with principal components. Based on the remote sensing results, five extractive sectors were mapped the mangrove areas quantified. Each of them showed different features, suggesting distinct fishery management strategies. We concluded that the remote sensing tools and techniques here applied can be used as subsides for mapping Extractive Areas and Fishing Exclusion Areas, as pointed out by the proposal for a National Management Plan for the Sustainable Use of Ucides cordatus.
